June is Cataract Awareness Month

The month of June is dedicated to the awareness and education of cataracts, which are the leading cause of vision loss in the world. Most people do not show symptoms of cataracts until at least the age of 40 but young adults or even children can be affected by cataracts. Eye injuries, heredity, smoking and disease could cause cataracts to develop earlier than age 40.

Cataract Treatment

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens that prevent light from entering the eye. The treatment for cataracts is cataract surgery which is one of the most common surgeries in the United States. A surgeon performs cataract surgery by removing the cloudy lens and replacing it.

Can I prevent cataracts?

Unfortunately, age-related cataracts cannot be prevented but slowing the progression of cataracts is possible by choosing a healthy lifestyle. Here are a some ways the progression of cataracts can be delayed:

  • Reducing exposure to UV rays
  • Eating healthy
  • Wearing eye protection
  • Avoiding smoking
